### 'A broken system': Despite decriminalization and a supervised consumption site, Ottawa sees 12 overdose deaths in July

Teresa Edwards lost her son Benjamin to an overdose at a supervised consumption site. Despite that tragedy, she doesn’t believe criminalizing the drug would have saved him.

“My son is gone. He didn’t die because of a criminal act, he died because he overdosed,” Edwards told Global News. “He used in a safe space. He was in a place where he could have been saved. But my son died.”

Ottawa has seen 12 overdose deaths in July, despite the city decriminalizing simple possession of drugs in June and having a supervised consumption site. That’s just one fewer death than in June.

And as the overdose crisis continues, Edwards is urging the federal government to decriminalize all drugs for personal use.

But the federal government isn’t expected to make that move anytime soon.

“In our conversations with individuals who are struggling with addiction, they’ve told us that the thing they want most is help, not handcuffs,” Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos told reporters on Wednesday.
