Imagine the economy is like a big party, where everyone brings food and drinks. When the party is going well, there's lots of food and everyone's happy. The Fed, like a party mom, watches how the party is going, and if things look too wild (like inflation is getting too high), they might take away some of the food or drinks to make sure the party doesn't get too crazy.
This week, there's a big party happening called the Fed meeting, and people are waiting to see what the party mom (the Fed) is going to do. Will they take away more food (raise rates), or will they let the party go on a little longer (lower rates).
Before the party, the mom is going to take a quick look around the house to see how things are going. One of the things she'll look at is the grocery list (retail sales), to see how much food people are buying. If the grocery list looks really small, the party mom might decide to take away even more food (raise rates more). If the grocery list looks really big, the party mom might decide to let the party go on a little longer (lower rates more).
So the grocery list (retail sales) could play a big part in what the party mom (the Fed) decides to do at the big party (the Fed meeting) this week.
